Master Builders Australia has applauded the decisive action by Commonwealth, State and Territory Building Ministers to pause the National Construction Code (NCC), with a further commitment to streamline the Code.
Master Builders Australia has been persistent in advocating for this pause and today’s announcement builds on the work from the Economic Reform Roundtable earlier this year.
CEO Denita Wawn said the NCC in recent years has shifted from setting minimum standards to imposing best-practice benchmarks, creating unnecessary complexity and poor integration.
“The pausing of the NCC and the work underway to streamline the code’s useability, reduce regulatory burden and remove barriers have long been called for and welcomed by the industry.
“Ambitious targets for accessibility and sustainability have added layers of regulation, diverting focus from safety, quality and the core building process.”
Master Builders acknowledges there will be no further residential changes in NCC 2025, outside of essential safety and quality changes.
“Builders need this certainty and can’t afford to be held back by unnecessary red tape if Australia has any hope of meeting our housing targets.
“Master Builders looks forward to working with the Federal Government and building ministers on the proposed NCC streamline and continues to call for regulated Australian building standards to be freely available,” Denita concluded.
